An indie space rock band who shared their name with a couple of other groups as well as John Carpenter's SF comedy flick and The Grateful Dead’s most famous live opus. They arrived in the late 1990s, perhaps a little too late and a little too inflexibly to catch light during the Britpop era and disappeared after releasing one fine album ‘Twenty-Twenty Sound’ from which this was the main hit (albeit in the form of a house remix which were de rigueur at the time).
I have re-cut the video promo (which is remarkably similar to 'Song 2' by labelmates Blur, from a couple of years earlier) with the original audio as it appeared on both the album and the ‘I Am The Sun’ EP.
They were a polished live act and I was lucky enough to catch one of their few ever gigs at Northampton Roadmender during the summer of 2000 and even schmoozed post-gig with the enthusiastic drummer and chatty frontman (who I think subsequently did some touring as guitarist for the Pet Shop Boys),
I can’t remember much, save they weren’t delighted with that most establishment of English record companies EMI, for whom they were perhaps a bad fit, which probably explains their departure and disintegration the following year.

Rock veterans who can still turn in shifts matching the standard they were displaying two or three decades ago – here in Buenos Aires 7 Mar 2008, that was part of the ‘Flight 666’ package released the following year that documented the ‘Somewhere Back in Time’ World Tour during which they famously travelled on their own customised Boeing 757, ‘Ed Force One’, with their very own polymathic pilot Bruce Dickinson in the cockpit who used the call-sign 666.

VIDEO INFO: Bolt-on extra to the 10th Anniversary DVD of ‘Everything Must Go’ – a live performance (with badly interlaced VT but worth it for the live strings) on ITV’s ‘Saturday Live’ during summer 1996 which you can be forgiven for forgetting as ITV did precisely that eight weeks after commissioning the series.
Speaking of curtains, everyone’s hair is lovely (apart, of course, from Lee Hurst, the bald one on ‘They Think It’s All Over’) but I have no idea what the intercut feed of taxis/police escort etc is about – probably part of the Chris Evans/Noel Edmunds shtick the producers were going for.

VIDEO INFO: The definitive of only a handful of recreations of the duet with The Cardigans’ Nina Persson (dressed in, erm, a cardigan) at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival.
Though this is an exotically rare dynamic for the band, everything else about the song was quintessentially Manics and a return to form – the wordy title lifted straight from a suicide note, the dark inflections contrasting Richey Edwards with Syd Barrett.
Nicky Wire lifts verbatim the “Trade All Your Heroes For Ghosts” lyric from ‘Wish You Were Here’ – one of several laments to the memory of Pink Floyd’s own disturbed, AWOL intellectual who had himself died not long before.
The tempestuous subject matter, set to JDB’s most sugar-coated chords, was propelled to the higher reaches of the singles chart from where they had been absent for some time but, being the Manics, it peaked at No.2, missing out on top spot to Beyonce in May 2007.
