Marathon is still the #1 most searched game on SteamDB in 2026, six weeks after launch.
The PvPvE extraction shooter has the entire community checking player counts because everyone’s debating the same question:

88k all-time peak, heavy scrutiny on daily averages, and $ 200M+ development costs and the pressure of all recent flops Marathon is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
It's an incredibly good game, but the more casual audience seems to be avoiding it.
But if they dumb the game down, it will be considerably worse and I'll likely stop playing it. It's basically a phenomenal game that doesn't appeal, I guess, to a wider audience. As ‘Marathon’ Goes On Sale, Is A Free-To-Play Switch In The Cards? Spoiler: No, I don't think so. For a number of reasons Marathon was the fourth best-selling game in the U.S. last month.
That's by revenue, which is notable given it's only a $40 game.
No one knows if that's good enough for Bungie and Sony but it's far from a dismal launch.
