Manitoba is raising salary levels for nearly all teachers this fall so those with the same qualifications are paid the same no matter where they work — while school divisions grapple with paying for it.
Some teachers will receive no pay bump because of the new harmonized salary grid, while others — including some new educators — will see an increase of four to seven per cent compared with last fall's division-specific grid. An estimate from the teachers' union suggests the average increase is around 1.5 per cent.
Previously, each English-language school division had its own salary grid, resulting in teachers earning different salaries depending on their employer.
But the last collective bargaining agreement brought all 37 division-specific contracts under one provincewide agreement. Annual salary increases of between 2.5 and three per cent paved the way for a standardized salary grid to take effect for the 2026-27 school year.
The salary increases related to harmonization are largest for teachers early into their careers.
The starting salary for new hires with a bachelor of education degree, after health and dental benefits were deducted, was between $66,000 and $69,000 last fall, depending on where they worked. Starting next month, that starting salary is $70,735.
