Bodycam Footage Video - On August 16, 2024, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was on land patrol in a marked vehicle in Broward County. During patrol, a call was received from another officer reporting that a group of alligator hunters had recently harvested an alligator near the northeast pump house at Stormwater Treatment Area ¾ (STA 3/4). The officer proceeded east on the north levee of STA ¾ to conduct a resource inspection.
Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the permit holder, who confirmed that an alligator had been killed and was in the bed of a truck. The officer exited the vehicle to conduct the inspection.
During the inspection, the officer observed that the alligator’s eyes were still moving. When the officer touched the eye, the alligator blinked, and its neck began to fill with air as it breathed. A bullet wound was visible near the alligator’s neck. It was determined that the bullet from the bang stick had struck the spine, paralyzing the alligator but not dispatching it. The officer instructed the permit holder to remove the alligator from the truck bed and administer a fatal shot to ensure the animal was humanely and ethically dispatched. The permit holder complied, pulling the alligator to the side levee and delivering a fatal shot.
A misdemeanor citation was issued for a violation of F.A.C. 68A-25.042(3)(d)1, which mandates that alligators captured using handheld snares and snatch hooks must be released or humanely dispatched immediately to prevent unnecessary trauma.
