The question followed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s statement that the city lacks the legal authority to enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mamdani said the federal government should enforce the warrant and added that anyone charged by the ICC should be arrested and tried.

The ICC sought warrants in 2024 for Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity connected to the Gaza war. The United States is not a member of the ICC.
