In the 28,000 ha Lower Kinabatangan Sanctuary hose's langurs, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pig-tailed macaques, gibbons, slow lorises, elephants and rhinoceroses can be found. It is also a bird sanctuary area.
Until 1987 the area was subjected to commercial logging and over 60,000 ha of rainforest was replaced by cacao and palm oil plantations.
