PODCAST SEASON 5 - OVERLAND THROUGH SOUTHEAST ASIA
We continue on our way south, towards the Cambodian border. At night we wake up from a tropical rain shower. It continues to alternate between showers and drizzle all day long. We make a stopover in Trat. We walk across the large market. It is striking how many different types of vegetables of excellent quality are sold. The market is supposed to be covered, but that is relative. We stay over in Ban Mai Rut, a picturesque fishing village. At the mouth of the river there are houses on stilts on both sides. In front of it are fishing boats painted in bright colours where men mend their nets and traps. Along paths on stilts from the river are dilapidated houses, also on stilts. The paths end in a kind of swamp. It is a typical Saturday afternoon with children playing, women cleaning vegetables and fish for the evening meal and families eating or watching TV. Many Cambodians live there. Some houses are neat and well maintained, but in many places it is a mess of randomly thrown rubbish, especially plastic bottles.
The handling at the border between Thailand and Cambodia is friendly but chaotic. The Thais keep sending us back and forth between windows. They keep asking for a paper that we should have received when we entered the country, but never got.
When after two hours we think we have collected all Cambodian papers and stamps and wait with the engine running until the barrier opens, we are put aside again. Immigration and Customs have been handled, but the police have an app on which your mother-in-law's favourite dish and other relevant information must be entered. An official with four stripes makes a heroic effort, assisted by a youngster with fewer stripes, but more sense of IT. In the end, the system is satisfied. It takes some getting used to suddenly driving on the right again. We buy a SIM card in Koh Kong, a lively town with a large market just across the border. With an umbrella in the left hand and the throttle in the right, people ride their mopeds through the rain. The moped as a means of transport for the whole family is the norm. The people are friendly and more English is spoken than in Thailand. Exchanging local money is not immediately necessary, because dollars are accepted everywhere.
We visit Peam Krasop National Park, next to our camping place. The park is a protected mangrove forest; you can walk through it on a concrete path. It is nice to walk in the middle of the mangrove. We are amazed at the many Cambodian tourists dressed in their best, but it turns out to be a group outing. When they have left with a tour boat, we have the park to ourselves. According to the Cambodian rainfall radar, it will rain along the entire west coast and will continue to do so for weeks. So we skip the islands that we had in mind there. We drive to Kampot. It is a beautiful drive through a sparsely populated area where mountains, uncultivated land, rice fields and villages alternate. The road is terrible in some parts: you have to find the asphalt between the potholes.
We camp at a cosy guest house owned by a German with many international guests. The sun is shining and we dive straight into the pool.
