Previously I cracked the planetary gearbox, so naturally I had to make an automatic gearbox.
Naturally this will be a stripped down model which will focus on recreating the gears ratios, clutches and path that the power follows (which it will accurately do for a traditional 3 speed + reverse automatic gearbox) but some sacrifices will need to be made with regards to the design of the housing (changed from a shroud to a set of pins) and the types of clutches (dog clutches and pins, rather than hydraulically actuated clutch pad) and that the clutches will need to be manually activated.
My goal with this is to create a display model which I have put on a shelf, which will also be used as an educational model. Unlike a standard manual transmission, the inner workings of an automatic gearbox are not intuitive, and I do not think that the normal videos and textbooks explain the concept well. It is my goal that this model helps some of you better understand how these transmissions work. And once you understand how a 3 speed works, it is very easy to understand how a gearbox with more speeds work, as it is simply additional planetary drives..... (okay maybe it is not that simple)
