Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each out to my yard to forage on this beautiful warm morning. It's that time of year to harvest the beautiful green sweetgum balls (Liquidamber taiwaniana). Since we have had several days of very windy weather it's the perfect time to go looking for them.

You either love the tree or hate it. However with that being said it is a very important medicinal plant as well as the main host tree for usnea. The whole tree is medicinal in many different ways but today I am focusing on the green gumballs. The prickly gumballs are the fruit of the sweetgum tree and a very welcoming sight to see becoming ripe.

So let's delve in to the medicinal benefits of the Sweetgum tree. In late summer and in to Autumn you will start to notice the bright green prickly gumballs laying on the ground. You want to harvest the gumballs with the least amount of brown on them. Once you have enough to make your first batch of tincture you stop harvesting them until you know you have enough for a second batch if you plan on making more tincture. They don't store well and will continue to turn brown so you need to make sure you have enough. The Cherokee and many Eastern tribes knew how important the medicine was from this tree and used it
extensively.

This year where I am living now has been ungodly dry and have noticed that the gumballs are not as juicy as usual. So this is the reason for the 80 proof vodka. If yours is very juicy you will have to use 100 proof so it doesn't ruin the tincture.

The green gumballs, harvested, beaten opened and then put in a jar to cover with vodka. They are very well known and documented of their healing abilities for: antiviral, anti fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerogenic, antihypertensive, anticoagulant, antihepatotoxic and wound-healing benefits just to list as many as possible. Of course always do your research to make sure it is right for you.

Hope this video encourages you to make your own gumball tincture to add to your medicine. If you have any questions please feel free to comment in the comment section I will answer as soon as possible. Everyone take care and have a blessed day. ❤️🍀🦉

Blessings,
Teresa 🦉
