When you get a little bit older, a random evening trip to Target with your wife and youngest daughter essentially becomes the ultimate date night! We headed out to our local Target store tonight after dinner just to browse, but we ended up stumbling upon some massive changes in the electronics department. It looks like Target is currently working on a complete, store-wide reset of their major electronics and gaming sections, and the changes are incredibly telling about the current state of physical media and retail tech.
First, let's talk about the video game aisles. The contrast between the different console ecosystems was absolutely staggering. The Nintendo Switch section looked incredibly clean, well-organized, and distinctly spaced out, taking up a prominent and healthy amount of retail space. On the completely opposite end of the spectrum, the PlayStation section was practically a ghost town. It was completely bare, picked through, and cleaned out. Seeing this barren PlayStation aisle immediately made me think about the growing rumors and recent industry discussions regarding Sony potentially phasing out physical media over the next couple of years. Are they just moving inventory around for the reset, or is this the beginning of the end for physical PlayStation games at major retailers? Interestingly enough, I didn't see anything for Xbox at all—which is another massive sign of the times for physical game collectors.
But the biggest and most exciting surprise of the night was located right behind the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch areas. Target is officially getting into the 3D printing game! I had heard rumors that Target stores were going to start carrying 3D printing equipment, and tonight confirmed it. Right there on the endcap, they were stocking Bambu Labs PLA Basic filament! While it might be priced just a little bit higher than buying it directly online, having the immense convenience of walking into a local big-box store and grabbing high-quality Bambu Labs filament on a whim is an absolute game-changer. Along with the filament, they also had a variety of Bambu Labs hardware builder kits in stock, including a neat little truck kit and a cool catapult kit. Seeing 3D printing become this mainstream is amazing. In recent months, we have seen Best Buy, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels start carrying filament, and now Target is joining the club. The shelves indicated that they will eventually be carrying actual 3D printers in-store as well, so I will definitely be keeping a close eye on that section in the coming weeks.
Finally, I couldn't leave the store without grabbing an absolute steal of a tech deal. If you know me, you know I am a total sucker for portable power banks. I managed to find an ultra-compact 4500mAh power bank on clearance for only $4.50! Yes, four dollars and fifty cents! It comes in ridiculously oversized packaging, but the unit itself is incredibly tiny—about a quarter of the size of its box. The output port is perfectly positioned, and I am almost certain this will fit right onto the top or bottom of my Nintendo Switch, allowing me to play and charge simultaneously. While it is not a fast charger—featuring a modest 12-watt input—you absolutely cannot beat the utility for under five bucks. Plus, if you use a Target RedCard, you get an extra 5% off!
This power bank is going to be an absolute lifesaver for me in exactly two weeks. In just thirteen days, I will be hopping on a flight to Salt Lake City to attend the Utah Retro Gaming Expo!
