_OH JOES! (A Proto Man Adventure)_ is full of passion from the very first cutscene to the final image of Proto Man and Kalinka.
I can’t stress enough how much creativity this fangame exudes, which is even more surprising given its (very risky) premise: providing interesting and fun challenges based entirely on one of the most dreadful and tedious types of enemies in the Classic Mega Man franchise: Joes.
Flashman85 (AKA GeminiLaser, AKA Nathaniel Hoover), the witty mind behind this project, dared to explore them in new ways, presenting many inspired setups that on closer inspection reveal themselves to be very satisfying puzzles to solve.
Puzzles to solve. It’s very important to keep that last point in mind during your playthrough. This fangame will be much better appreciated if tackled as some sort of puzzle-action platformer. It’s as much about firing and dodging as it is about thinking and searching for ways to get around tricky combinations of assets. Pick the right mindset, and you’ll have a blast; treat is as a standard Mega Man game, and you’ll risk missing the point entirely.
I usually focus my challenges on bosses and stages, this video being a very rare occasion where I cover the full game. This is even more special because Flashman85 was the person who rekindled my passion for Mega Man. Before (binge) watching his playthroughs both in his Flashman85 and GeminiLaser channels, Mega Man was to me just a franchise that I had enjoyed in the past, but which was completely forgotten in the present.
All of that changed the moment I learned about his videos a few years ago. His enthusiasm, passion, that fire that is much easier to feel than to explain, got me completely hooked. It was extremely contagious. His content and the way he presented it reminded me of why I enjoyed so much those games in the past, convincing me to go back to them, while also introducing me to the wonderful world of fangames and its rich community.
That’s the main reason that inspired me to start recording and sharing my gameplay through my channel, while also interacting more instead of being just a lurker. I tried to cultivate at least a fraction of that immense energy that Flashman85 brings to everything he does. Those changes were paramount to my path, leading me not only to create lots of content, but also to be part of the team creating the fangame _Mega Man: The Sequel Wars_ as its lead tester.
And that’s one of the most difficult and amazing things that a content creator can do: inspire others. Show a very technical video, and those watching will applaud the skill; convey the passion that ignites that skill, and those watching will feel an irresistible urge to try that path as well. Flashman85 did (and does) that to me. And I’m very grateful for that.
