Jeanie Shekel introduced me to Magic Loops. I had tried a similar technique before, using a bit of thread but with less successful results. The material of the loops (a type of beading thread with memory such as Fireline) is essential to the success of this technique: they are fine, can be bent out of the way when tatting and are also very strong.

Apologies for the poor choice of background which makes the loops (made of very fine thread!) quite hard to see. I decided to upload this video anyway as you can still see how to use the loops but will consider remaking this video sometime in the future.
