After watching this video you will know how to upgrade your old Mac Pro with a USB 3.0 card.
Especially if you need to transfer a lot of data on a regular basis, such as in my case for video editing, a faster Inateck USB 3.0 controller can help speed things up significantly.
First I will do a quick unboxing, as always I like to show you a few close-up shots of the parts used in this upgrade.
Next, we install the card into the Mac Pro, and then we run some speed tests.
While the internal SATA II port should deliver around 250MB/s, with a SATA III expansion card we can get internal speeds of around 500MB/s.
My expectation is that USB 3.0 will be somewhere in-between, we will also compare the speed of my external SSD on the USB 2.0 port.
That way you can see a clear difference before and after the upgrade.
Overall I like this card very much, however, it is worth noting that USB 3.0 can create interference in the 2.4 GHz band, which is also used by Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
This is a known issue of USB 3.0 in general, and in my testing, it unfortunately did interfere with my Apple Magic Mouse when a drive was connected to the card.
Otherwise, the upgrade works perfectly well!
