More and more people want to upgrade their Mac Pro with a fast off the shelf NVMe. While macOS High Sierra and the initial release of macOS Mojave did not come with NVMe boot support, Apple eventually included a Boot ROM update in their subsequent releases.

macOS versions:
Mojave 10.14. (Boot ROM 138.0.0.0.0) - NO
Mojave 10.14.1 (Boot ROM 140.0.0.0.0) - YES
Mojave 10.14.2 (Boot ROM 140.0.0.0.0) - YES
Mojave 10.14.3 (Boot ROM 140.0.0.0.0) - YES

After watching this tutorial you will know how to upgrade your Mac Pro 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1 with the Sonnet Fusion (FUS-SSD-4X4-E3) NVMe raid card.

If you are unsure, please back up your data before going through to this process, or pull out your old drive before starting the install.

You can easily do the Boot ROM update by downloading the installer from the App Store and starting it. If you still have an older version of Mojave the installer will offer you to update.

Keep in mind that a normal adapter card only uses 4x lanes, while the raid card translates 4x lanes PCIe 3.0 to 8x lanes PCIe 2.0!

Overall I am very happy that Apple included the NVMe boot support for these very fast raid adapters.

Looking forward to editing more demanding 4k footage in ProRes 422, otherwise, if you plan to only edit 1080p footage it may be overkill to use a RAID card because “normal” footage has lower data rates.

Approximate values for video editing, using a Canon EOS R and external recorder for Apple ProRes:

Normal 1080p footage, less demanding data rates:
• H264 IPB = 30MB/s
• H264 ALL-I = 90MB/s
• Apple ProRes 422 HQ = 220MB/s

High resolution 4K footage, more demanding data rates;
• H264 IPB = 120 MB/s
• H264 ALL-I = 480MB/s
• Apple ProRes 422 HQ = 786MB/s
