LUX: Hito Steyerl - This is the Future @180fact

German filmmaker and artist Hito Steyerl’s work interrogates the digital world, surveillance capitalism and artistic production. Her work spans essays, such as 2009’s In Defence of the Poor Image, and immersive video installations such as 2015’s Factory of the Sun, which explores the global flow of data in the contemporary digital landscape.

Another key idea in Steyerl’s work is artificial intelligence and its implications for human society. Machine learning is utilised in her 2019 video installation This Is The Future and its accompanying multi-channel installation, Power Plants, both of which are currently showing at LUX: New Wave of Contemporary Art, a new exhibition co-curated by Fact and SUUM Project.

Co-commissioned by 180 Studios and conceived for the 58th Venice Biennale, This is the Future, soundtracked by Kojey Radical and Susumu Yokota, follows a woman who sets out to find a garden that she had to hide in the future in order to protect it. The digital flowers of Power Plants are generated by neural networks that are programmed to predict the future by calculating the next frame in the video.

In this film, Steyerl talks to Fact about the ideas behind This Is The Future and her ideas around the future of machine learning and AI in art and human society. “This Is The Future is an optimistic vision of the future, in that it tries to imagine in future in which there is a lot of plants that have a lot of political characteristics or abilities,” Steyerl tells Fact. “They are able to heal the present, if you like. It is definitely a vision of nature which is more optimistic than the present really allows.”

Richard Mosses new installation transports you into the heart of the Amazons ecological red zone

$Robert Dietz & Claudia Rafael - Swallowing Tubes Producer and sound designer Robert Dietz and digital artist Claudia Rafael are close friends, in fact, they live next door to each other. When the time came for Dietz to think about visualising the sounds of Schnups, his debut EP for Live At Robert Johnson, Rafael was the obvious choice, but not just because they happen to be neighbours. Swallowing Tubes is a profound testament to the strength of their creative partnership, showcasing a stunning marriage of sound and image that seems to work at a molecular level. Drawing inspiration from the dreamy pads and transcendent arpeggio’s of Dietz’s track, Rafael set her sights on the heavens, using a text-to-image GAN (generative adversarial network) to create an infinite zoom through a lysergic landscape of heavenly bodies. “While listening to the song, I tried to put my feelings into words and fed the A.I. with these,” explains Rafael. “It felt like flying through an otherworldly digitopia. There’s a certain beauty in the track but also a rough counterpart. From these ideas I defined the look and the A.I. created these abstract shapes, flying through an infinite zoom.” Clouds, wings, trees and sky morph and shift into one another, refracted through technicolour light. Responding in kind to the track’s swells of synthesis, our infinite zoom through this landscape is occasionally interrupted, lurching us back to a macro view of a world built on top of Rafael’s written response to Dietz’s sounds. “Unfortunately I can’t say exactly what the actual inspiration for it was, because I tend to be guided by feelings and momentary images,” says Dietz of the track. “The best things happen when you can let yourself go and forget everything around you, the machines are running and you just record. That was the case with this piece of music. The chord progressions on this track are very dreamy, have an IDM aesthetic but the 303 bassline creates the hypnotic feel. I also used a microphone to record myself and my room running back and forth between the machines while working on it.” “I would say that the track totally reflects me as a musician and producer,” continues Dietz. “Although I’m constantly trying out new ideas and aesthetics, because I get easily bored, everything takes place in the electronic universe, either for the club or for home pleasures. About two years ago I started working for visual projects too, when friends of mine needed music and sound for their animations and productions for fashion brands. It’s great when you combine your music with the visual ideas of others and when you are able to give more depth to images and intensify emotions.” ‘Swallowing Tubes’ is taken from Schnups, out now on Live At Robert Johnson. $Alexandra Koumantaki - Gaze The work of Greek artist Alexandra Koumantaki is characterised by constructed interstices between both the natural and the technological and the present and the past. Site specific installations in uninhabited natural spaces see the Hyperlink curator drawing together synthetic material and geological phenomena, reaching back to the ancient cultures of Greece and Egypt that have shaped her native Crete and her current base of Athens, while gesturing towards speculative futures with sci-fi sculpture and artificial light. In Gaze, Koumantaki collaborates with Simon Kounovsky, also known as CGI artist, sculptor and filmmaker Axonbody, in a hybrid work inspired by ancient Hellenic tablets, video game aesthetics and J.G. Ballard’s foundational work of climate fiction, The Drowned World. Conceiving of a world in which humanity is long gone, yet their indelible mark remains in scraps of abandoned technology, Koumantaki and Axonbody reckon with the urgent reality of climate catastrophe using the signifiers of lost and virtual worlds, reconfiguring technology as contemporary mythology. Installed near the ancient sanctuary of Hera in the Corinthian Gulf, the artists flatten the freak weather and global warming of the present into ancient myth, illuminating the fragile scale of human history with orange alien light. “What divine trace of this omnipresent technology remains among the shimmering ash of urban rubble, the global desert of networked ruins, and the forsaken wreckage of the cloud’s ambient hyper-architectural infrastructure?” asked Deptford gallery Gossamer Fog in their text accompanying Koumantaki’s recent London show, Shimmering Ashes Whispered Twilight Tears. “What orphaned relics of divine computation persist like midnight sun? What numinous drone idles in submerged temples?” Flecked with salt spray, reflected in the wine dark waters of Corinth and refracted through squalls of eerie noise, courtesy of Morgan Hall and Koumantaki herself, the strange light of ‘Gaze’ shines as the residual essence of the god in the machine of industrial society, a technologically-mediated encounter with a new numinous, leaking through the cracks left behind by catastrophe. “The light installation symbolises computation and human creation,” notes Koumantaki. “The technology as godly epiphany where human mind overcame their nature.
