Lizard Point was created with the help of the ZKM (Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe) using the software "Genesis" created by ACROE (Cadoz, Luciani, Florens) Grenoble. The piece simply relies on physical models using aspects of particle physics (see Cadoz and others ICMC 1995 Proceedings). The sounds were then further modified with conventional sample processing (CLM by William Schottstaedt).
The models are programed via patches which create vibrating structures. These structures are animated to control and understand the energy flow of the vibrating structures. The movements of single masses are recorded into a file and normalized to serve as a soundfile. The patches are created out of single masses and can be combined in a intuitive way. The masses are connected to each other via links. Masses have to be attached to fixed points. A simple vibrating structure can be understood as a guitar string with fixed attachments at both sides of the string. The string is represented by a chain of single masses. If one mass is displaced, like plugging the string, the energy of the displacement would be distributed over the whole chain of masses until it develops resonances dependent of the length of the string.
The result of this effort to model physical conditions are sounds which seem to have a natural background. Of course the natural background has a negative aspect as well: the reference to an existing physical environment decreases the excitement or the unusual aspects of a sound. Because of this other sample modification techniques are used as well to modify the sounds after the process of synthesis.
Lizard Point was created as a commission of the ICMA for performance at the ICMC 97 in Thessaloniki.

Borderlines basiert auf einer Vielzahl vokaler Aktionen, die Jean-Claude Eloy Anfang der 1990er Jahre im Studio für elektronische Musik des Westdeutschen Rundfunks aufzeichnete. Auf der Suche nach geeignetem stimmlichen Material für seinen Zyklus Songs for the other half of the sky, in dessen Zentrum exzeptionelle Frauenpersönlichkeiten stehen, lernte er die Schauspielerin Petra Meinel- Winkelbach kennen. Obwohl er von der expressiven Qualität ihrer Stimme unmittelbar ergriffen war, wurden die Aufnahmen aus künstlerischen Gründen zunächst verworfen. Als Eloy sich viele Jahre später diesen Stimmelementen aufs neue zuwandte, wurde seine Arbeit vom Tode Meinel-Winkelbachs überschattet. Das Werk ist dem Andenken der Schauspielerin gewidmet.

Wovon befreit sich nun die Kunst der unsichtbaren Klänge?
Weil es sich hinsichtlich dieses Werkes um eine mich selbst einschließende Erfahrung handelt, darf gefragt werden, auf welches Theater ich mich bei der Befreiung dieser Schatten beziehe.
Zunächst einmal muss die Absicht, die sich aus der dem Titel eingeschriebenen Fiktion ergibt, präzisiert werden.
Die namengebenden Schatten sind offensichtlich Klangschatten.
Diese entwickeln sich folglich aus Bildern, Umrissen, Formen, Abdrücken, Spuren und sogar aus Zeichen.
Im Spiel mit diesen Formen - diese Schatten - möchte ich mich zweifellos von einem alten Prinzip distanzieren, das für gewöhnlich in der Musik waltet: das des Interpreten, welcher als konstituierendes sowie organisierendes Individuum das Hören in eine aktive Gegenwart verwandelt.
Dieser Vorgang - die Exponierung des Interpreten, seiner Meisterhaftigkeit, die inspirierte Aufführung, die er feilbietet - ist stets ein Sieg über die Zeit gewesen: ein überlegener Sieg des Körpers.
Meine Suche verfolgt hingegen einen anderen Weg als den der Zeit; einen anderen Sieg, nämlich den über den Prozeß der Wahrnehmung, über Erinnerung. Ich versuche dabei den durch die Bewegung von Formen und Figuren erzeugten Raum zu verschriftlichen.
Das Unsichtbare durch die Zeichnung von Klängen - und ihrer in der schemenhaften Welt der gedanklichen Bilder beheimateten Schatten zu gestalten, ermöglicht es, eine andere Geschichte zu erzählen.
Diese Geschichte ist die der personnages-sons, die sich in Räumen auflösen, wohligen oder unheilvollen Räumen, widerspenstig, störrisch, aber auch wohlklingend und sanft.
Unter diesen Klangfiguren/-personen befindet sich eine, die den Helden symbolisiert. Handelt es sich hierbei um den Hörer?
Zweilfellos. Und da dieser oft in Erzählungen Erwähnung findet, darf er nicht allein von Mutproben, Überfahrten, Schlachten und Verwandlungen kraft magischer Objekte abhängig sein.
Daher habe ich aus der den images den sons, aus der den i-sons innewohnenden Magie neue Verfahren für die Mikromontage, die Formantgewinnung bzw. die auf unterschiedliche Materialien angewandte Filterung gesucht, um unterschwellig lauernde, innere Relationen zu schaffen.
Vielleicht besteht der Sieg für den Hörer-Helden darin, auditiv hinter das Bild zu treten, um den Bereich der weißen Schatten zu erreichen. Die ist der Ort der Ausgeglichenheit, an dem der menschliche Schatten transparent wird.
Dort gibt es nur noch die Erinnerung. Es ist der Garten Eden, der Teich der Nymphen, ein Ort flüchtiger Erscheinungen, die Erinnerung an einen Gesang, Atmen, Schlagen, unsichtbare Flügel, stille oder bewegte Wesen, überreizt und fieberhaft, die allmählich sich beruhigen, sich trennen, auflösen, vergehen....
Ein Augenblick der Refelxion...
Und wie man so schön sagt: Ein Engel, der vorbeifliegt.
