Research from Washington University in St. Louis is helping to flesh out the origin story for the so-called “lost crops." These plants may have fed as many Indigenous people as maize, but until the 1930s had been lost to history. Natalie Mueller, an archaeologist in Arts & Sciences, is growing the lost crops in an experimental garden. Through trial and error, she is testing how these plants were domesticated by ancient people. Rob Connoley, Chef-owner Bulrush STL, is bringing some of the lost crops into dishes he prepares at his popular local restaurant.
