Gena Gunn McClendon started the Voter Access and Engagement Initiative at Washington University to understand a phenomenon she saw on election day in 2008: hours-long wait times for citizens trying to vote in a low-income Black neighborhood. Her research showed her that there are often problems at polling places in low-income Black neighborhoods that deter people from voting.
