I joined my friend Justin from Precision Landscaping and Hamilton Sod to explore two forgotten cemeteries deep in the woods of Stewart County, Georgia. These burial grounds are far from any modern road, completely hidden by time and nature.
Our journey took us to the first cemetery, where we found one single marked grave—but countless unmarked burials hidden beneath the forest floor. From there, we pushed even deeper into the woods and stumbled upon the site of an old home. While no ruins remain, the ground is littered with 1800s artifacts—fragments of the past telling a story of those who once lived here.
Near these relics, we made an even more shocking discovery—a piece of Native American pottery, evidence of a civilization that predates the plantation era by centuries.
Following old road beds, we uncovered the long-lost Armor family plantation cemetery. Unlike the first burial ground, this one featured impressive plantation-era brickwork and many marked graves. But just outside its boundaries, we found the graves of enslaved individuals, buried separately from the main cemetery.
Then, we made one of the rarest discoveries yet—a wooden headstone, likely dating back to the plantation era. Wooden markers rarely survive the test of time, but this one has remained standing for over a century, marking the grave of someone long forgotten.
