Lords of the Fallen 2023 is a much better version than the original game, that was decent for it's time but has been outdone by so many better alternatives, including this one. The umbral system is a unique one for the soulslike genre, lots of great designs for weapons and armor, detailed environments and some great boss fights. But the game gets dragged down the dirt with it's over reliance on enemy ganks, reusing enemies and turning some bosses into regular enemies.
The technical issues are also another factor which is still being worked on. Overall, I thought it was really good, definitely one of my favorites so far despite it's flaws in the non from software soulslike category.
As for the original, give it a try but don't expect much. It's not as good as it used to be.
Additional Notes:
- The games audio is decent but at times was a bit weak during combat. Parrying just doesn't sound as satisfying as it does in Sekiro or Lies of P.
- Music is pretty decent, with a more cinematic score vibe, as if you're watching a fantasy movie. But it's not something I'd listen to outside of playing the game.
- Had frame rate issues with the character creation menu. But to summarize, you can make models to abominations, it's fairly in-depth.
- Didn't have magic to show because I don't use magic in soulslikes. But from what I've seen in other videos It's pretty well implemented, especially with the ability to hotkey multiple spells.
- The game has a weapon upgrade system like the souls games, but it can be grind to get more and there's only a couple of final materials to max a weapon.
- The mimic item pickups are extremely annoying to deal with. Sometimes it's not clear which item is safe to pick up and which one isn't.
