While carrying out Turnout and switch machine maintenance , my crew and I were asked to give back our track authority for the rail grinder. This is the large grinder that usually lives up North in the coal fields , so it was a rare opportunity to catch it ..especially at night!
These are large and complicated machines, which reshape the head of the rail to allow the most efficient contact surface for train wheels.
They also look fantastic at night!
