As documented by TheZZAZZGlitch, sound 00 in glitch text boxes (or on the map) can corrupt C414, making 0x01 and 0x43 sub-tiles appear on the screen when a text box appears or the start menu opens. Sound banks 02 and 08 corrupt C214 (coordinates of first NPC) to y=253 (0xFD) and x=66 (0x42), causing them to disappear. If you enable walk through walls and corrupt your coordinates with expanded inventory to be match these, you can spot the NPC but not talk to them.

Steps (causing the Route 1 NPC to disappear):
1. Set up the expanded inventory

2. Change item 31 quantity (wMapMusicSoundID) to x0, then ride and dismount the Bicycle (this will also corrupt the second byte of the player ID causing a different save message).
3. The Route 1 NPC will warp away.
Extended steps (locating the NPC):
1. Set up any variation of Safari Zone ledge walk through walls (see https://glitchcity.wiki/Walk_through_walls_glitch_(ledge_method) )
2. Perform the ordinary steps to make the Route 1 NPC disappear.
3. Change item 34 quantity (wYCoord) and item 35 (wXCoord) to be close to FD 42 (x253 and X Defense) then walk there (walking one step down increases y by one (rather than decreases it), and walking right increases x by one).
4. You can now see the NPC.
