Marine One never crosses an ocean by itself. Days before the President lands anywhere in the world, It gets jammed into a C-17 Globemasters and plopped down onto foreign soil, it has its rotor taken apart, tail pylon folded in, one helicopter per jet. Then like the worlds most important lego project the Marines rebuild them on the tarmac, fly a check flight, then rehearse the whole trip without him, learning the routes alongside the host nation's air force. By the time Air Force One touches down, the helicopter waiting on the ramp is already professionally trained for the day.
This video follows that operation start to finish. The Air Force has a code name for these flights they call them Phoenix Banner and they outrank almost everything else the American military puts on a pallet. We’re gonna talk about how the C-17 loads, the paperwork these missions are allowed to skip entirely, and the contract requirement that the newest presidential helicopter managed to fit inside a single cargo jet with near 30 people and all the necessary support gear.
Then we follow the pipeline around the world across twelve months. A Sea King on a royal lawn at Windsor. The morning one broke down over England and the President walked across to the identical helicopter flying beside it. A White Hawk climbing into the Alps toward Davos, after Air Force One itself failed the night before. And Beijing, where the armoured cars arrived weeks early and the helicopters never came at all.
