In this video, we took another glass bottom boat ride! This time, it was to Little Tobago, a small, hot island off the southeast coast of Tobago and a bird sanctuary. After hiking, we snorkeled nearby. :)
Then went to observe Leatherback Sea Turtles at night using red lights (so as not to disturb them).
*I took a break from editing my Tobago videos to think long and hard about including anything about the Leatherback Turtles. With so much press about moron tourists killing animals while mistreating them (killing a baby dolphin by taking it out of the ocean for pictures, killing a swan while dragging it out of the lake for a picture, people putting a bison calf into their car because it looked cold... etc.) I didn't want to encourage such actions. There is a way, however, to be responsible tourists while appreciating local wildlife.
ALWAYS observe wildlife from a safe and comfortable distance. When it came to these Leatherback's I felt that some tourists stood
too close while she was laying her eggs.
NEVER touch the wildlife. Even if a guide tells you it's ok! Especially sealife. Leatherback Turtles and all ocean creatures have a "biofilm" covering their bodies which protects them from infections. The oils on our skin destroy this biofilm.
Leatherback Turtles DO NOT go into a "trance" while laying. Once the process begins they simply can't stop even if you get in their face or touch them. Keep in mind this female is giving birth (a process you can't start and stop), she's struggled to get out of the ocean, she's trudged on land and dug a nest with her flippers, she's exhausted and stressed. RESPECT HER. Thank you.
