Hi, everybody! Today, I want to share with you two very basic Japanese phrases that we weren’t taught in the beginning of any textbooks, but we use EVERY DAY! This is my first Japanese lesson so be nice to me please. :)
Let me be clear, you’re EVENTUALLY taught these phrases, but they help SO MUCH in such diverse situations that I think if you come to Japan you should know them just as well as, “Konnichiwa” and “Arigatou gozaimasu”.
The first phrase is, “Daijoubu desu”! This can mean a few slightly different things depending on the circumstances and inflections, but the best translation is probably, “It’s fine” or “I’m ok”. I use this EVERYDAY! It’s my go-to phrase in so many scenarios!
The second phrase is more so an attachment to another word so you have to know a LITTLE more Japanese, but you’d still be a beginner for sure. It’s “janai desu”. This basically means something isn’t. This helps when you’re describing something and you don’t have the full vocabulary. Let me explain. If you know, “ooki” (big), but you don’t remember how to say, “small” you can say, “Ooki janai desu.” And BAM they know it’s not big!
