Welcome to part twenty four in this series of videos in which I take the advice of all of those Christian fundamentalists and read my bible - literally
You see if you are going to believe in the literal "truth" of the bible and take it literally then literally is the only way that you can read it.
In this episode Abraham send his servant on a quest to find the ideal woman for his son Isaac who by this time is forty years old and still without a girlfriend.
Of course Abraham's idea of an ideal wife for his son is probably a little different from yours of mine considering that his wife was also his sister.
The only problem is that the land that they live in is populated by bloody foreigners and heathens and the last thing that he would want would be for his son to marry someone he wasn't related to.
For this reason he sends his servant off to find his relatives back in the old country as he had heard that this nephew had had a daughter.
Will Abraham's servant be successful in finding a wife for Isaac and will the family let her go?
Of course, there is a serious consideration here and that concerns that age of Rebekah, Abrahams great niece. You see if this book is to be taken absolutely literally then Abraham heard of her birth straight after she was born and that would make her three years old by the time of the events in this chapter.
Of course the news could have taken some time to get to Abraham but according to rabbinical scholars, not too much time as she still needed a nurse and not a handmaiden.
This episode is a long one being a full 67 verses in length and the challenge was to keep it from running on and on. It doesn't help that it repeats itself at great length in the middle but thankfully the author learns to summarise by the end
