You’ve followed Mero’s story. Now here’s what it really took to get a terrified lion cub rescued from illegal private keeping to safety at his new home, FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary. 🌿

Our FELIDA team drove from the Netherlands, while project lead Patricia and colleagues travelled from Vienna. They met in Czechia, coordinated every step, and loaded Mero onto our Big Cat Ambulance to start his journey home.
The crate & the kit. 🧰
A crate built specifically for safe rescue of wild animals with secure locks, a water bowl bedding, and supplies for the trip - everything logged and checked.
A vet by his side. 🩺🦁
Wildlife veterinarian Szilvia accompanied Mero all the way, closely monitoring his wellbeing.
Paperwork, permits & protection. 🗂️✅
Weeks of planning, cross‑border authorisations, and cooperation so one cub could get a new shot at life.
All of this—every kilometre, every checklist, every careful lift— for one reason: so a lion who never should have been a “pet” can experience a better future. 💛
Two months after his rescue, Mero turns one today!
He still has a long way to go to recover from the trauma of his early life. Our dedicated caretakers at FELIDA are giving him all the care he needs to heal and grow into a confident lion.

Treating stray dogs in one of the most challenging locations the team has ever experienced – a landfill in Podujeva, Kosovo. 🐕🇽🇰
Since 2024, FOUR PAWS has teamed up with Dr. Albatrit Halili to implement a sustainable dog population management programme in Podujeva, using the Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return procedure.
This time, the collaboration went a step further to address the rising concerns around the municipality’s major hotspot for stray dogs, where dozens of animals live among piles of garbage.
One of FOUR PAWS mobile clinics and its team of vets and dog catchers came all the way from Bulgaria to lend a helping hand. Despite the challenges, both crews came as one and achieved remarkable results in only ten days, catching and treating more than 120 animals in and around the landfill! 🚑
A milestone for Podujeva, but only one step further on a long road towards better stray animal care in Kosovo. A road paved with many challenges, which can only be overcome with the utmost dedication to animal welfare.

A year ago, two tiny cubs named Runa and Kodi arrived at our BEAR SANCTUARY Domazhyr, and what a journey it’s been since. 💖
Today, we celebrate their first trip around the sun in our care, and our hearts couldn’t be fuller watching them thrive.
Runa and Kodi were just weeks old when they were found alone in the Ukrainian wilderness — orphaned and frightened.
Weighing only 5 and 7 kg, the exhausted cubs had no chance on their own. An emergency rescue brought them to safety and straight to our sanctuary. 🌿
In an ideal world, they would have been rehabilitated and returned to the wild.
But with no facilities in Ukraine equipped for brown bear rehabilitation or rewilding, we stepped in to give them the life they deserve.
And today? Runa and Kodi are thriving. 🌼
Strong, playful, curious, and confident, exactly as they should be. To mark their one year anniversary, their caretakers spoiled them with their favourite enrichment and tasty treats. 🍏🍊
Here’s to many more happy, healthy years ahead, little ones. 🐻💚

A tyre, a bit of honey, or some frozen fruit: what may seem quite ordinary at first glance actually serves an important purpose for our bears. 🍯🫐
These types of activities are known as enrichments. They encourage natural behaviours and help keep the bears physically and mentally stimulated. 💪🧠
Rather than simply having their food served to them, the bears have to search, climb, lick, explore, and sometimes even solve small challenges. 🌿🐾
In the wild, bears spend a large part of their day foraging for food. Enrichments are designed to reflect this natural behaviour, providing variety and stimulating the senses. This allows the animals to satisfy their natural curiosity and helps prevent boredom. 🐾
For rescued bears in particular, these challenges make an important contribution to their wellbeing. ❤️🐻

Born to Perform, Rescued to Live: Manuschka’s Story. 🦁
Born in a facility in France and sold to a circus in Germany, she was forced to perform tricks from the time she was just a cub. Her world was confined to cages, crowds, and constant travel.
But everything changed in July 2024. 💛
After the heartbreaking loss of her companion, Manuschka was given a second chance. At the request of German veterinary authorities, we stepped in and brought her to TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary, where she began to heal—physically and emotionally. Through gentle care and positive reinforcement, she slowly started to trust again.
Then, in October 2024, she made her way to her forever home at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands. 🏡🌿
Today, Manuschka is thriving. She’s regained her appetite, built strong bonds with her caretakers, and loves nothing more than lounging on top of her favourite platform in the sun. ☀️

Moody the lion was starving in a war-torn zoo in Sudan. Forgotten behind bars as conflict raged around him, his future looked hopeless. 💔

After a daring rescue, Moody was brought to safety at our LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary — where he now basks in the sun, his beautiful mane growing strong, finally at peace with a pride that calls him family. 🦁❤️

While the world is rushing around, our rescued big cats are enjoying a well-deserved lie-in from the comfort of their cosy beds. 🌳
And honestly... who can blame them? Autumn is creeping in and its officially sleepy season.
Did you know lions can snooze for up to 20 hours a day? Tigers, leopards and jaguars arent far behind, often spending between 12 and 20 hours sleeping depending on their activity levels and food availability in the wild. 🌄

Behind the cute puppy posts, the misery: undercover investigation in Bulgaria 📣
➡️ Puppies like Bella are being bred in conditions far from meeting basic welfare standards, only to be illegally trafficked on social media!
In the past months, FOUR PAWS have investigated numerous suspicious dog advertising posts coming from Bulgaria. 📲
Hiding in plain sight in Facebook groups, unscrupulous sellers have developed techniques to trick unknowing users and to bypass platform rules. Posing as curious customers, only a few DMs led us to uncover a large-scale online dog trade, widely spread across Europe. 🌍
🔎 Eleven sellers were visited by undercover investigators, and what they found on-site exceeded our worst expectations: from questionable to sometimes dire conditions, few-week-old puppies like Bella are being shipped across the continent, very often without the required identification and vaccination.
❌ This gruesome trade is only enabled by Meta’s inaction against it.
