U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon is asking colleges and universities across the country to update their mission statements and policies, raising questions about affordability, student success, free speech and discrimination in admissions.

Connecticut lawmakers from both parties agree that college affordability is an issue that needs attention, but some Democrats are raising concerns about other parts of the letter. Connecticut State Colleges and Universities said the system remains committed to providing an affordable, high-quality education, while Yale President Maurie McInnis said the university is already taking steps to protect free speech and academic freedom.

Gov. Ned Lamont criticized the Trump administration's effort to shape university policies. McMahon is asking schools to update their policies by the end of the year.
