Detroit's historic Kronk Gym is open once again with plans to train up to 200 kids.
Some big names were on hand Monday for a ribbon cutting at the new location, 9520 Mettetal at West Chicago - and so was our Jason Carr.
The bright colors the logo, the walls of glory, the feeling of an old-school boxing gym. Kronk, reborn in the basement of a west-side church
FOX 2: "How do you think this speaks to the legacy of your father?"
"Right now, I know he would be proud," said Sylvia Steward-Jones. "I don't think his name will ever die because of the things he accomplished."
Sylvia Steward-jones, daughter of Kronk founder Emanuel Steward, was among those on a panel inside the ring for a ribbon-cutting and grand reopening Monday.
Kronk standouts Tommy Hearns and Milton McCrory traded good-natured verbal jabs about the good-old days.
McCrory is going to train the next roster of champions in the new Kronk, and he has a knockout plan.
FOX 2: "You say stop 'em, you don't want any decisions like Mayweather-Pacquiao?"
McCrory: "I had too many bad decisions when I was coming up when I was in amateurs," he said. "That's wrong. When I turned pro I tried to stop everybody."
Boxing ref and judge Frank Garza telling the crowd on hand there was no place like the original Kronk, with title fights being booked on a pay phone.
He also honored the legacy of Kronk trainer Keith Lee, who passed last year.
"The Kronk Legacy Award presented to the family of Keith Pasquale Sr. for his service to our country, the boxing community. Making a difference in the lives of metro Detroit kids."
In recent years Kronk's future had been in doubt but of this day his daughter says:
"I love it, I love it," she said. "And hopefully this time next year even with more champions sitting at the panel."
