Leevi Madetoja (1887-1947) was a Finnish composer and music critic of the early 20th century, one of several contemporaries whose works were overshadowed by Madetoja's teacher Jean Sibelius. For more on Madetoja, see my score video of his "Okon Fuoko" ballet suite: youtube.com/watch?v=f0rtl4OEXeM
Madetoja's piano trio is his first catalogued work, written in 1909 and premiered shortly afterward. Even at this very early stage of his development, one can discern the genesis of his quite individual musical language, blending typical National Romantic elements with touches of introverted melancholy and a hint of harmonic and formal influence from French music - which would soon develop further when he went to study in Paris in late 1910.
