In this lecture, we discuss the third law of thermodynamics and its consequences. We discuss the statement of the third law given by Max Planck, using which we show that the various properties such as heat capacities and coefficient of thermal expansion tend to zero at absolute zero temperature. We also discuss the Nernst's unattainability principle and the fact that a Carnot cycle cannot have 100% efficiency. Finally, we conclude the course with an interesting way of presenting all the laws of thermodynamics. (c) Supreet Singh Bahga, IIT Delhi.
