In this lecture, we apply the second law to analyze various open systems. We begin by deriving the general governing equation for the second law applied to a control volume. For this we apply the second law to a control mass as it flows through the control volume. Thereafter, we look at various simplifications of the governing equation for steady and transient flow processes. We consider the example of steady-state operation of an adiabatic nozzle and turbine. For the transient case we discuss the example of the charging of a tank. We also discuss the concept of isentropic efficiency. (c) Supreet Singh Bahga, IIT Delhi
