Citroën is known for its innovation, and Renault is often overlooked. But it was Renault in the 1960s pioneering hatchback designs, and it was Renault that put it all together into one of the first small hatchbacks, the Renault 5. It struck a chord with customers. It was sold as the cheeky “Le Car” in North America, and went on to become the best selling car in France for most of the 1970s and 80s. How did this stylish hatchback come about, why did the second generation look so similar to the first and what’s next?
