This remix from the Red, Blue, and Yellow series is a little different from my previous arrangements. I really wanted to disturb the listener with this piece, and create a sense of unease and misfortune (keep watching the video!)
Lavender Town is infamous for its uncomfortable music, which itself is surrounded by rather depressing tales of evoking suicide and depression from players. It has also sparked all kinds of in-game rumours from fans of the game, such as that of Gary's dead Raticate.
The town is also home to Pokémon Tower, where restless ghosts and spirits reside. My favourite part of the whole Lavender Town story is that of Cubone and Marowak, and this is what I really wanted to focus on in my arrangement. The disturbing situation with Marowak's spirit stuck in purgatory within the tower is something that really stands out in this Pokémon game, and so I wanted to lend some music to it.
You'll notice that everything is slightly out-of-tune and a little off-beat, an intentional move to distort your comfort a bit. The flute is a nod to the Pokéflute (which is the final reward for completing the tower), and the xylophone is supposed to represent innocence and adolescence.
The entire last section of the piece is devoted to Cubone, who must be feeling incredibly broken knowing his mother's spirit is stuck inside the tower.
