Moving right along, we have an actual ice themed remix for this month! I recently played through Sonic 3 & Knuckles and beat it for the first time (no Chaos Emeralds though, because I'm terrible at those 3D stages...), and this was one of the songs that caught my attention. Lava Reef Zone itself was very entertaining to me for some reason. Maybe it was all the shields and extra lives you could get? Or maybe it was the transition from lava to ice/crystal cavern.
The idea for this one was to make the second act version more "icy", if that makes sense. As I was thinking on it, the bass style of DKC2's "In a Snow-Bound Land" popped in my head. The two meshed nicely, so then it was a matter of sequencing everything! I also found this VST that emulates the SNES reverb rather nicely, so now my snare hits have that ringy echo the original has!
Unfortunately, rendering this video was not very kind. Some of the audio has been alliased/muffled, and a video I have in the video does not really play. The MP3 in the description has the music covered. As for the video... Eh, it works :).

Week 2 of this months weekly uploads, and this one isnt from a video game! When I was growing up, my mother would sing songs that matched with what she was doing at the moment. When she was getting another cup of coffee, she would sing the first two lines of the chorus to this song. Pour me another cup of coffee! For it is the best in the land! I never knew who sung the song until recently, when I did some searching and found this tune by Buck Owens, and its not even about drinking coffee! Some more digging, I found that a man named Terry Fell was the original composer, and Buck Owens was in Terrys band when it was performed.
This idea came about just on a whim. What if this country song from the 60s was played in a chiptune style from the 80s? I put together a new bass line, and then everything else fell in place. As mentioned above, this was an entry in PRC339 over at OCRemix. I do have a pretty strong background with this game, though, as I first played it on PS1 around when it came out. I never beat it back then, though. Since my oldest brother owned the PS1, I started and never beat a lot of games on it as he moved out/sold them after he was done playing them. I got the chance a little over year ago to play through and beat this game, and I was pretty satisfied with the whole game.
As for this mix, the first idea that popped in my head was this sort of half-time, R&B style groove with some synth leads. I went for a subdued take on the first playthrough, before opening the gates and letting the lead fly. I only had roughly 10 days or so to work on this, so I was pretty satisfied with what I did in that time frame. I usually keep a backlog for these uploads to lower stress, which means that I usually have a lot of time to work on songs if I need to. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment!
