Munson Chapel, Azusa Pacific University
Program Note:
Vidi Aquam (“I saw water”) is a chant traditionally sung during the Easter season, symbolizing the life-giving water of baptism and the resurrection of Christ. In this reimagined chant, I take a darker approach. The horn solo reflects the tragedy of Jesus’ death, while the voices represent the Christian bystanders. At times, they cry out in shock as the soldier pierces Jesus’ side; at others, they whisper subdued alleluias. The prophecy is fulfilled, but their praise is quiet, held back under the weight of Roman oppression.
Harmonically, the choir sings primarily in ancient-sounding quartal relationships (chords built on fourths) while the horn solo floats above them, representing the divine presence of the Father grieving over the Son. At times, the horn lines are fluid and legato; at others, sharply articulated, expressing the anguish of Christ’s crucifixion. The second time through the piece, articulations are left to the horn player’s discretion, allowing them to bring their own interpretation to God’s grief. The piece deliberately sits in this grief, drawing focus on the text.
This piece was commissioned by Joshua Howard.

[Verse]
Maybe some small talk to lower the tension
I’m tryna forget all my affection
Don’t tip toe anymore
[Chorus]
Don’t give me hope
I’ve been alone
Dreaming of
The day when you show up at my door
At my door, at my door
Do you really know?
Do you really know?
Do you know the depths of what I’m feeling?
Do you really know?
Do you really know?
Do you know the secrets I’ve been keeping?
[Verse]
Do you know how hard it is just to talk to you?
When the phrase on my tongue is itching to come through
Ditch the small talk, we were never good at,
I don’t trust myself enough to say no to you
[Chorus]
Don’t give me hope
I’ve been alone
Dreaming of
The day when you show up at my door

[Verse 1]
I could sing it loud, I could whisper low:
You’re my beating heart, You’re my living soul
My one true love, Lord, You’ll never turn Your back to me
[Verse 2]
Sinking like an anvil through the ocean depths
When I have no peace, when I have no rest
Please give me life, Lord. Show me grace, Lord.
Your love has no flaws but I pray You keep me at Your hip like a child, love me like a bride, and hold me close
[Chorus]
My heart’s been destroyed, take Your strings and make me whole
Mend me, Love, as my flesh and blood go cold
(string slide)
[Verse 3]
All busted up, my body rusts, pinioned in these wretched cuffs
I pray, Lord save me, I’m not worthy, but all my life I’ve been so lonely
Keep my vagabond feet on Your road
I could be so bitter, but that ain’t the truth I’m walking toward, no that ain’t the truth I’m walking toward
[Bridge]
How could You die for us? Your only child for us? Mercy, gentle Love, my heart can’t take much more
How could You live for us? Your endless love for us?
My soul adores, adores, adores You so
I’d die for, die for, die for you Lord
A thousand times again, again and more
Just to set a hand upon your robes
[Chorus] x2
My heart’s been destroyed, take Your strings and make me whole
Mend me, Love, as my flesh and blood go cold
[Outro]
Mend me, mend me, mend me Lord oh mend me
Mend me, mend me, mend me Lord oh mend me
Mend me, mend me, mend me, mend me Lord oh mend me
Mend me, mend me, mend me Lord oh mend me
