Here's a comparison shot of the laser scanner (top) and the realtime laser simulator (bottom). I think it does a pretty good job of capturing the performance of the real thing. I chose a more complicated/messy video for this one, to better show off the limitations of the system (that's Marisa Stole the Precious Thing by IOSYS).

Note: the laser is, of course, adjusted to a smaller size and lower brightness here than usual. Otherwise the simulator on the screen would be completely overpowered by the laser.
