Two magnificent Lappet-faced Vultures visit the NamibiaCam waterhole for a drink and a refreshing bath.
The Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) is Africa's largest vulture species, with a wingspan reaching up to 2.9 metres. These powerful birds play a critical role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carcasses and helping prevent the spread of disease.
Unlike many other vultures, Lappet-faced Vultures have exceptionally strong beaks, allowing them to tear through tough hides that smaller scavengers cannot penetrate. They are often the first vultures to feed on a carcass, creating access for other scavengers.
Sadly, Lappet-faced Vultures are listed as Endangered due to habitat loss, poisoning, and collisions with power infrastructure across Africa.
