Kīlauea Update - Oct 18, 10:34 AM
Episode 35 ended at 3:32 AM after 7.5 hours of nonstop dual-vent fountaining. The south vent peaked near 1500 feet, north vent hit 1100 feet - the highest fountains of this eruption so far. Lava output was estimated at 13 million cubic yards, covering two-thirds of Halemaʻumaʻu crater.
The eruption ended fast, with tilt switching from deflation to inflation around the same time. Summit inflation has resumed, but another episode likely won't happen for at least two weeks.
Gas plume topped 16,000 feet overnight. SO₂ emissions have dropped to non-eruptive levels.
Ash and Pele’s hair were reported across Kaʻū and along Highway 11.
