Lair was a casualty of the early 7th gen fanboy flame wars, and is a game that I've been playing through tonight, and it's drawn me in. Quite frankly, despite it's flaws, I really like this game, and I'm even playing through it with the motion controls, even though I have downloaded the analog control scheme from the Playstation Store. I am playing through it first, as originally intended, then I'll turn analog controls on.
Quite frankly, this game got unfairly destroyed by the gaming media at the time. It was released at a time when Sony couldn't even buy a positive article written about them, and I think the murdering of Lair by the gaming media (who probably couldn't even beat the game) really does reflect the negativity in the gaming media shown towards the PS3 at the time. Not that Sony was innocent, they definitely made some dumb choices ($600, really?), and they did force Sixaxis controls on Lair.
The truth is, even if this game had analog controls, and controlled just like Rogue Leader, it was never going to be a killer app for the PS3. First of all, gaming had changed very quickly, and the days where a game like Rogue Leader could be a killer app for the Gamecube were already gone. By this time, people wanted the Halo, Gears of War, and, eventually, Modern Warfare kind of game. The seventh gen killed so many genres of games, and development was so expensive that one failed game (Haze/Lair) could kill an entire studio.
All that being said d*mn it, even with it's flaws, this game is way better than the reviews made it out to be. I played partially into this game in the past, but I have been playing it for hours tonight, and it has really drawn me into it. Once I learned the controls, I was able to just play the game, and enjoy it. Factor 5 really did try with this game, and from it's story to it's premise, to even it's amazing soundtrack, they tried their best to make this game as epic as possible. There really is some quality here if you can get over the controls, or if you can download the analog controller patch. It's worth giving this game a chance. It wasn't given a fair shot back in the day, but maybe people should give it a fair chance now.
NOTE: I am running this game in 1080p on the console, and it doesn't run the best at that resolution. Framerate dips don't bother me that much, but it probably runs a little better at a lower resolution.
