At 6:10PM on March 9, 2026, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 8900 block of St. Ives Dr in Hollywood Hills. The initial request for an LAFD response came through as a radio transmission at MFC (Metropolitan Fire Communications), LAFD’s dispatch center at approximately 6:10PM. LA County Fire Department Engine 7 came up on LAFD Tactical Channel 7 requesting a full structure response to the 1200 block of Hilldale Ave, stating they were on scene of a 4-story ascending hillside single family dwelling with fire on the roof.
LACoFD E7 initiated an offensive fire attack, as units from LAFD and Beverly Hills Fire Department were dispatched. Due to the narrow street and steep hillside, arriving units strategically positioned themselves for best access to the home, which was determined to be on the street above Hilldale Ave, St Ives Dr. The Incident Commander, AC2 Mel Beard, promptly elevated the incident to a Greater Alarm, requesting additional resources due to significant access challenges, concerns about nearby structures, and dense vegetation.
Ground crews from the 3 allied agencies established an offensive operation from both their Hilldale Ave position and the St Ives location, which was determined to be the address side and first floor entry into the home.
LAFD Air Ops Helicopter Coordinator (HLCO) (operating in a light duty helicopter) conducted overhead reconnaissance to monitor “ember cast” (wind-blown embers that can ignite spot fires at a distance). IC also staged a heavy-duty, LAFD water dropping helicopter overhead for an immediate response.
Over 100 firefighters, including those from Los Angeles County Fire Department and Beverly Hills Fire Department confined the blaze to the roof with no extension into the main habitational area of the home, nor to any vegetation or nearby structures. Within 42 minutes, the firefighters had completely contained the fire and declared a full knockdown.
A firefighter from LACoFD E7 did sustain a small burn and was immediately transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) also responded to the incident and has not released any information regarding the cause of the fire.
