ATWATER VILLAGE - Los Angeles Fire Department crews are managing a recycling yard fire that began at approximately 9:30AM this morning, with operations at 4560 West Doran Street expected to continue for several days due to the volume of material involved.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a single non-injury explosion involving a compressed natural gas (CNG) truck. Incident Command is coordinating the movement of several other affected CNG trucks from the premises. To support suppression efforts, heavy equipment crews are assisting with the breakdown of burning recyclables, while drone teams provide aerial assessments to guide operations.
Multiple agencies are engaged in this large-scale incident. Building and Safety personnel are on scene for ongoing assessment of structural and site safety, while utility providers including LADWP are managing risks to nearby power lines, gas lines, and transformers. Metrolink worked closely with LAFD to pause and then safely resume train operations on nearby tracks -- all train services are now running. LAPD, CHP, and DOT continue to assist with traffic control; the 134 and 5 freeways, as well as San Fernando Road, were briefly impacted due to apparatus placement and reduced visibility from heavy smoke. All major thoroughfares are now open, though surface streets in the immediate area remain closed.
While all materials on site are reported to be non-hazardous recyclables, environmental monitoring is underway. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and Watershed Protection are on scene to evaluate and mitigate any potential ecological impact from the large amount of runoff near the LA River.
