A parliamentary question has challenged the eligibility criteria for a summer intelligence internship involving MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.
The scheme is designed for applicants from Black, Asian, mixed heritage and other ethnic minority backgrounds who also meet specified socioeconomic criteria. That means white candidates are not eligible for this particular programme.
So why does the restriction exist, and what does the government say makes it lawful?
In this video, I show you the internship criteria and the parliamentary question and answer on screen, including the government's explanation that the programme is a form of positive action permitted under the Equality Act 2010.
