A clip from episode 2—Kumu Hula Maelia Loebenstein Carter explains her interpretation of one of the most recognized sayings in the Hawaiian community, “ʻaʻole pau ka ʻike i loko o ka hālau hoʻokahi,” which literally translates to “not all knowledge is taught in one school.”
Kumu Hula Maelia Kahanuola Loebenstein Carter sits down for a talk story interview with Kumu Hula Kawaikapu Hewett. Maelia is a former Miss Aloha Hula and kumu hula for Ka Pā Hula o Kauanoe o Waʻahila which was started by her late grandmother and hula master Aunty Mae Ulalia Long Loebenstein. As a child, she was chosen by her grandmother to carry on her family’s hula legacy. Maelia continues the teachings of Aunty Mae, taking honors at the world-renowned Merrie Monarch Festival as well as other hula competitions.
Ke Ao Mālamalama o Ka Hula: The Enlightenment of Hula is a talk story series featuring some of Hawaiʻi's most celebrated and accomplished kumu hula hosted by world renowned songwriter, kumu hula and Windward CC lecturer Frank Lehua Kawaikapuokalani Hewett. Intimate talk story and panel discussions offer a deeper understanding and appreciation for the traditional ways of learning hula and “becoming” a kumu hula.
