Deciding the first cover of the new decade was challenging. I knew that if I wanted it to have any meaning, it'd have to be something closer to my roots of this channel and I thought especially with the past year being so good for Zelda, I'd start off with one of the first songs to ever make me fall in love with video game music. It also helps that I was watching ZFG's amazing OoT run on GDQ last week while deciding what I wanted to do this week. Kokiri Forest is a cover I've planned to do for the past 4-5 years and I never could figure out how I wanted to approach it. I sat down with it after coming home from MAGfest and really enjoyed playing around with C - Bb chord riffs. It was tough to make them interesting, but I realized a lot of what makes them work with the melody is their simplicity so I tried to preserve as much as I could while also making it heavy.
I also really enjoyed re-harmonizing stuff later on. It's funny how it's taken me ten years to really figure out what my sound is and how I can harness it and be calculated with some of my decision making with arrangement and tone. I'm kind of a slow learner, I guess. This song means a lot to me and I'm happy to finally bring it to you! Please enjoy and I hope ten years from now, I'll be ten times as good as I am now since I'm like a THOUSAND times better than I was in 2010 at this!

I was glued to my TV when I first started Bowsers Fury. I honestly dont know what I expected, but I didnt expect what felt like a Super Mario Odyessy quality Mario experience, albeit, shorter of course. I had an absolutely blast getting all 100 shines within 24 hours of installing the game (with some time to play 3D World with Adriana in there too!), but the real reason I was excited to dig into this was the trailer that was released and about a million messages immediately asking if I was going to cover this once it was heard.
Ive always been iffy on covering things that are already metal, it takes a lot of the creative process out and some of the reward for getting to hear a composition ramped up in intensity. Lately, Ive been really trying to let go of that and find that songs like this have their fun in the playing rather than the production as theyre actually written for the instrument Im playing it with (wow, imagine that). This was a lot of fun and I tried to still ramp up the intesity with it.
I usually go with someone else for vocals, but I think Im finally reaching a point of saying f*ck it and just going for stuff like this even if I dont feel confident. I did vocals for my Red Dead Redemption 2 cover mostly as a joke, but people seemed to really enjoy them and also the back up vocals I did for Devil Trigger and Rules of Nature. This song is a metal staple of Video Game composition as a whole. Id say as far as guitar music in gaming, it transcends even the titan that is Xenoblade Chronicles itself. Ive had more than a handful of students come to me with this song wanting to learn it, so Ive known how to play it for so long, but Ive always felt weird about covering songs that are already metal. With the Definitive Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles just releasing though, there feels like there will hardly be a better time to take on this classic though.
Ive really enjoyed doing the last few Xenoblade songs since its nice to cover music actually designed to be played on a guitar, but I always seem to struggle to arrange these songs differently since it always seems to take away from the feel of the original. I really tried my best to replicate the original sound while also intertwining my own style into this one. Still with how much work I put into selecting subtle string and synth parts and layers along with writing a quick original solo after doing my best to cover the original, this cover came together really quick and was a lot of fun!

I was really happy to see all of the excitment for You Will Know Our Names when I released that cover, because it made me realize just how many of you guys have been waiting for Xenoblade covers! Ive done a bunch in the past for medleys, but never gave them the full cover treatment. This song is probably one of the greatest overworld themes of all time. I never got to give a take on the last bits of the song and always had a good idea of what Id do with it. Im also a huge sucker for the chord that the chorus opens up on so it was really fun going all in on this.
One thing I thought was particularly interesting about the shoot is that because of the two tone of the Arctic Dream Majesty guitar, it looks like I have two seperate guitars for leads, but thats the same guitar just from a different angle! Really happy to have that guitar back so that the guitar John Petrucci gave me can remain safe in my studio.
A lot of people on my streams have been asking why I dont do medleys as much any more and why Im doing full songs like this of ones Ive done before. Medleys are usually impossible to license for distribution on stores like Spotify and iTunes, and since thats a big source of my income, I cant justify all of that work for a song I wont make nearly as much on unfortunately. It takes almost 4 times as long to make a full medley than a single song cover like this one. Plus, I always get comments from people saying they want a full cover of specific songs on all the medleys I do, so Im just kind of assuming this era of FamilyJules is more or less dedicated to those requests! Everytime I cover something from Danganronpa and sometimes even on songs that arent Danganronpa, I get comments demanding I cover Scrum Debate from V3. I finished V3 about a month after it came out and even still I find myself thinking about the ending, the characters, and the story to this day... But the one thing that puzzled me most of all is how to make Scrum Debate, an epic yet fairly repetitive electronic bop, into an enticing metal cover. I found myself coming to the conclusion it wasnt possible so I usually just told people not to expect it.
This week I just decided to do it. Even if it didnt sound good, I wanted to at least try it. It got me to break out my Digitech Whammy Pedal again to take on those crazy synth lines and also got me to try my hand at incorperating 808 kicks like I did way back in my Winterbliss cover from Castle Crashers. Even with all that and putting in a wacky solo, I still found myself worrying it wouldnt work. Adriana took a listen and told me, not every song has to be attention grabbing at every moment, sometimes a song just has to be a vibe. So I hope thats what this cover is for you guys. A vibe.
