Aristotle tells us that the first Oracle, Priestess at Delphi, bore the name Phēmonoē: She who speaks the mind of God. Now Chilōn, the Sage of Sparta, made a pilgrimage to ask her: "What is the most important thing for a human being to learn?" And Phēmonoē replied: ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥTΟΝ.

📜 Video Transcription
Habit is easier to change than nature … and even habit is hard to change, precisely because it is a sort of nature, as Evenus says: ‘Mark me, my friend: it’s a long-continued training (meletēn), / And training in the end becomes people’s nature (physin)’. Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics 7.10, 1152a29-33
Socrates does not heal souls … by bringing opposites to bear on opposites, but rather by [applying medicines] that are like our condition now: if someone is madly in love, he says, ‘learn what it really means to love beauty’; if someone wants money, he says ‘learn what it really means to be self-sufficient’; if someone loves pleasure, he says, ‘learn what the easy life truly is, which the Poet Homer ascribes to our gods “who live at ease”.’ (Olympiodorus On Plato’s Alcibiades 7,4-8)
Every conscious being (logikos), taken together, is related to all the others like the limbs of a living whole… The thought in this will strike you more powerfully if you keep on repeating to yourself: I am a limb of the connected body of conscious beings. But if you change one letter from l to r and you call yourself merely a part [meros] rather than a limb [melos], you don’t yet truly love your fellow human beings from your heart… (Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 7.13)
