Somewhere in Mount Kyllene (Peloponnese), the divine trickster of the Greek pantheon, the God Hermes, stumbled upon a turtle and crafted the first lyre to be. Thousands of years later, in the Appalachian mountains of the 19th century, an unknown and inquisitive musician took his saw and began to play with a bow.
A singing saw is an American folk music instrument capable of continuous glissando, a sound that creates an ethereal tone similar to the theremin.
This song, titled after one of God Hermes' epithets, commemorates that magical moment when human creativity (or divine) crafts something unique & unexpected.
It is performed here by Calvin Cairns on the fiddle, and Theodore Koumartzis on a LUTHIEROS Lyre of Hermes, masterfully handcrafted in Greece by the Koumartzis family.

🎙️ Who is Calvin Cairns, the Joyful Fiddler?
Calvin is a Canadian folk musician who toured extensively as solo, with various bands and theatre companies in Russia, Europe, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, and from coast to coast across Canada.
Among others, he performed with the Caravan Stage Company, a horse-drawn theatrical troupe, and with the Canadian folk music institution Stringband, fiddling his way from Moose Jaw to Moscow, including performances in Belarus, Boston, and Baker Lake.
Since 2004, his love of music and teaching fiddle has taken him to remote First Nations communities in the far north of Canada. He currently lives, teaches, and performs in Victoria, BC.

🎙️ Who is Theodore?
Theodore is the youngest brother of the Koumartzis family. Being part of the family's endeavor since its early stage, he soon came to be an inspiring top-notch lyre player, constantly learning and experimenting with musicians around the world.
He is the founder of the PAUSIS Project, a curator at the SEIKILO Museum of Ancient Music in Greece (Thessaloniki), and an integral part of LUTHIEROS Music Instruments.
