Kevin Costner Pays Tribute to 'Yellowstone' Co-Star Dabney Coleman
In the acclaimed drama series, Coleman's last on-screen part was that of Costner's father.
Actor Dabney Coleman, who portrayed the father of Kevin Costner's character in Yellowstone, passed away.
Coleman passed away on Thursday afternoon, according to a statement sent by his daughter Quincy Coleman to ET. Coleman was best known for his roles in 9 to 5, Tootsie, Boardwalk Empire, and other films. He was ninety-two.
The patriarch of Costner's John Dutton III, John Dutton Jr., was portrayed by his former co-star, who was honored on Friday by the actor on his Instagram account.
The actor, who was referring to the Yellowstone season 2 episode in which his character flashed back to his father's final days, uploaded images of "one of the most heartwrenching scenes I've been a part of."
Costner went on, "What an honor it has been to work with Dabney Coleman." "May he rest in peace."
Coleman's final appearance on film came in the poignant "Sins of the Father" season 2 finale, whereby Costner's character comes to terms with Rip (Cole Hauser) as a son and works through his own feelings around his father's death.
In a statement to ET after learning of his passing, Coleman's daughter said, "My Father, Dabney Wharton Coleman, took his last earthly breath peacefully and exquisitely at 92 in his Santa Monica home on Thursday May 16, 2024, at 1:50pm."
"My father crafted his time here on earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity," she said. "He performed this last act of his life with grace, brilliance, and mastery as he lived. Everlastingly surviving by his children, Meghan, Kelly, Randy, and Quincy Coleman, as well as his grandchildren, Hale and Gabe Torrance, Luie Freundl, and Kai & Coleman Biancaniello, Dabney Coleman was a teacher, a hero, and a king. His spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones, and his legacy.
Jeffrey Goldberg, Coleman's agent, added in a letter, "I will just say that it has been a real joy to represent Dabney and to be able to call him my friend. He will be sorely missed."
