A controversy has erupted in Kerala after Mar Thoma Church clergy trustee Rev. Dr. K Thomas called for HIV testing before marriages within the Church and made remarks about ensuring that a prospective bride’s body had not been “abused” before marriage.
The comments were made during a Mar Thoma Church family gathering in Thiruvananthapuram on August 30 and have sparked criticism over women’s autonomy, privacy, premarital relationships and the way women’s bodies and past relationships are discussed.
