Dr. Lindley grew up in a small town and her dad was an internist there and so she had always been around medicine and knew from an early age she wanted to be a physician. She came to Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital after medical school because she felt it’s an outstanding place to train and to practice medicine. Also she is originally from the Midwest, from Southern Illinois, and was excited about being closer to home again. She feels St. Louis has a lot to offer and now that she has children, it’s a great place to raise kids as well. She was very fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a lot of her training time during fellowship getting unique experiences managing women with heart disease who were pregnant. Because of this, she has seen a high volume of women with pregnancy related heart disease. The hemodynamics during pregnancy are different than a non-pregnant person. The tools and medications available for use during pregnancy are sometimes different than what can be used in a non-pregnant patient. Women who have heart disease who are considering pregnancy really should be evaluated before they even become pregnant because the risk of any given woman is very unique and individual to her particular heart problem. A lot of women go into pregnancy without any heart problems and unfortunately some women develop heart problems during pregnancy or shortly after pregnancy and it’s a real challenge for these women because it’s not something they expected, it’s not the experience they were planning to go through when they had their child. Dr. Lindley and the heart team work very closely with obstetricians at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital and take a team approach to taking care of these complex patients. It’s such an exciting but also sometimes scary time in women’s lives and Dr. Lindley considers it a privilege to get to be a part of it, to help keep them healthy and get them through that so that they can continue on with their lives and enjoy their family.
